Obstetricians are medical doctors, who also specialize in the reproductive health of women. The main job of an obstetrician is to look into pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum issues. They monitor the health of both the mother and the developing foetus throughout the pregnancy process. Obstetricians also look after any complication that may arise during the pregnancy phase. They even provide medical interventions if needed to ensure a safe delivery. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth, such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, cord complications, placental disruptions, foetal discomfort are also attended by the obstetrician. Obstetricians are specially trained to perform caesarean operations or even intervene in childbirth as per needs. Some gynaecologists are trained as obtetricians as well so they perform both the roles as “obstetrician-gynaecologist” or “obs-gyn” as they are popularly called.
